Dog Days of August

Now that I have a dog of my own I am discovering the joys of the walk. Granted, I roll, but Henry walks. It’s just me and my doggie going down the sidewalk together. Unfortunately, it’s hot weather and muggy because it’s August in the Sonoran Desert, so our walks are rather short. In the months ahead when the cooler weather comes I’m hoping Henry and I can take longer walks together. Here is a snap of us yesterday on our way back home. We were both rather overwhelmed by the sultry afternoon.

Grief Is Hard

Recently I lost a member of my family to cancer. She was a dearly loved person who was beautiful both inside and out. This is the first time that I’ve dealt with grief over the death of someone close to my own age. Grief is difficult and hard, but also a necessary part of life. I am blessed though to know that I will see her again in heaven. As a Christian we have that hope because of the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ and the power of his resurrection from the dead. As he said to his disciples, he is in heaven preparing a place for us. I know that Ashley is there and that one day I too will be there when my time has come.

Friday Afternoon Adventure

So it’s a hot Friday afternoon in Scottsdale. Norm and I go out for a quick bite to eat and then we head to Walmart. We had to get a prescription filled for Norm, so while we waited we went shopping. We picked up a few household goods and some grocery items and then we wandered the aisles looking at all the stuff one can find at Walmart. Some people think that you can find just about anything at Walmart, but from my experience that’s not always true. For instance you cannot find affordable life insurance at Walmart, nor can you find polenta. Now if I wanted life insurance I would probably consider going online or finding a local agent. But when you can’t find polenta at the Walmart superstore, it’s a really sad day. That means I have to go to another grocery store! Come on Walmart, can’t you people get your act together?

Backyard Fantasy

For years I’ve been wanting to do something with our backyard. I have this fantasy where one of those yard makeover shows comes to my house and offers to redo my backyard. I would have water wise landscaping that uses native plants that would not require excessive watering. Of course I would want a beautiful tree, like a  Mesquite tree that provides a nice amount of shade and a place for birds to nest. Then I would like a water fountain where birds could come and drink and I could enjoy the sounds and sights of bubbling water. Outdoor globe string lights would be hanging around a beautiful pergola. It would make for nice evenings. A small little adobe fire pit would be just the thing for those cool winter evenings. Who knows, it might just happen for me.

Playing by Ear

I come from a family of musicians. Everyone in my family can play an instrument except me. My mother can play piano and the accordion. My father used to play the violin when he was a teenager and my brother can play guitar and piano. I’m just really good playing music on my iPod. I love to listen to all kinds of music – jazz, classical, soft rock, country and easy listening. It just depends on my mood. The other day I saw a listing for monster cable headphones for sale and I’m thinking they might be just the thing for enjoying music from my iPod. I’ll have to put it on my wish list.
