Rainbows

rainbow.jpgA couple of days ago Norm and I woke up to rain cloud filled skies. I didn’t really think much of it until I got out of the shower and looked out the bedroom window to see a beautiful rainbow spread across the sky behind our house. Rainbows are beautiful and Norm and I discussed rainbows and how much we enjoy seeing them as he snapped this photo. Right away Norm said it was a sign of God’s promise. Anyone who’s read the Bible or knows the story about Noah and the great flood knows that God put the rainbow in the sky as a reminder of his promise not to destroy all life on Earth by a flood.

I told Norm about the different colors of the rainbow and something I learned in grade school science class to help one remember the order of the colors — Roy Green Biv — which stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. If you’ve ever looked at a rainbow you’ll see that the colors are always in the same order.

Rainbows are definitely eye-catching and I’m always awestruck when I see one. They remind me that God remembers his promises and that’s a good thing. How many of us remember our promises? I must admit I sometimes don’t remember the ones I make.

Drops of water in the sky act as prisms of the sunlight shining through them and then you see the rainbow, but you can’t see it unless there something dark behind it and the light and the drops of water are all lined up together. I want to be a prism of God’s light which means I will have to stand in the gap between the darkness of the world in which I live and reflect the light of God’s love that shines through me. There isn’t always a rainbow in the sky when you see rain clouds, but sometimes there is, at just the right moment when the sun is shining from a certain angle and the droplets of water are in just the right position. I pray my life would be like that — and that I would be in the place where God would have me to be so that his light shines through me at just the right moment for someone who needs to see the light of his love in their circumstance.
