Fully Devoted: What Is True Spirituality?

Norm and I participate in a weekly Life Group as part of our church community. We just started a new session last week and the book we are using is called Fully Devoted — living each day in Jesus’ name. It’s part of a series of books on pursuing spiritual transformation. Here’s a few of my thoughts from the reading the first chapter:

  • Becoming more loving toward God and people is the measurement of true spirituality. “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did” (1 John 2:6) therefore, to pursue spiritual life is to know Jesus more intimately and to live as if he were in my place.
  • God wants to be a part of every aspect of my life, not just what I consider spiritual. He’s interested in everything I do and wants to be a part of it.
  • Too often we fall into the trap of thinking that acquiring knowledge, following formulas, and obeying the rules will automatically lead to true spiritual maturity. Been there, done that. Certainly learning and practicing the spiritual disciplines are vitally important for growing and maturing spiritually, but unless you’re changing on the inside they are all for not.
