  1. Online Shopping

June 30, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

When I’m looking to purchase things online I usually look for specials or deals where I can save a few bucks. After all, I don’t have that much to spend, so I want to make every dollar count. These days many of us are in the same situation and retailers understand that so there are deals to be had everywhere. For instance, I found these tiger direct coupons today. If I were looking to purchase electronics then these would be a great deal. Today I’m not ready to purchase, but I always look. You never know what you’ll find.

  2. Breathing Lessons

June 29, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

Over 10 years ago I suffered through a bout of pneumonia.  It was a scary time for me and one that I hope I don’t ever have to repeat.  I remember being in the hospital very congested and finding it difficult to breathe.  I was put on oxygen and that did make breathing a lot easier, but I was stuck in bed as the oxygen came out of a pipe in the wall.  Fortunately for me using oxygen was a short-term therapy and I did not need to use oxygen once I left the hospital.  I’ve seen people using portable oxygen devices such as the inogen oxygen concentrator.  It seems to give a much better quality of life for those who are dependent on oxygen for breathing effectively.

A long time ago I read that most people don’t breathe correctly due to bad posture.  I’m one of those people so I often have to remind myself to breathe deeply and to tilt my chair back throughout the day so I can take in deep breaths.  Ah, that’s better.

  3. Yes, It Really Happened

June 21, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

As previously mentioned by my husband, we are going through some kitchen reconstruction at our humble abode due to a drain pipe leak behind the wall.  One wall in our kitchen, which also is shared by the two bathrooms in our home, has been without drywall for a few weeks.  Last Friday afternoon a couple of men came over to install new drywall and paint.  It caused quite a bit of racket and they were here for 5 to 6 hours.

Whenever anyone comes to our house our cat GG hides.  Generally she runs to our bedroom and hides in the back of the closet.  Our other cat, Miss Ellie, is not at all put off by visitors and will usually hang around to see what’s going on.  So, I was not at all surprised that we did not see GG all day.

The men finished their work around six that evening and about an hour later Norm and I went out for dinner since we still do not have total use of our kitchen.  I expected when we came home that we would see GG waiting for us in the living room.  No, she was not there when we returned an hour later.

Norm had been saying for several weeks that he was concerned that GG would get sealed up in the wall.  And, when she wasn’t waiting for us, I began to think it might be true.  I went into the kitchen and called her name.  Sure enough, I heard a soft meow from behind the wall.  Oh my!  What do we do?  I called 911, but they told me they did not do animal rescue.  Perhaps I should call animal control?  Norm was on the other phone with the contractor.  He told us to go ahead and cut a hole in the wall.  You see was already 8:30 PM.  Norm got the neighbor to help him cut a hole in the drywall.  I knew the only place that she could be, that the workers would not have noticed, was in the tight space running perpendicular to the kitchen wall that holds all the pipes for the bathrooms.

The whole was cut open and the neighbor left and GG did not come out for over three hours.  She must have gone to sleep deep within the wall.  We called her and called her to no avail.  Thinking that we needed some sort of exit alarm, we put a bowl of tuna fish on the kitchen floor next to the whole in the wall.  It was nearly midnight before she emerged and we were exhausted from all the worry.  I am so glad she survived, but honestly I was ready to ring her neck when she came out!

  4. Verbal Mystery

June 18, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

So. Yesterday I was at the dentist for three hours for the final part of a multipart root canal procedure. With my mouth full of dental tech stuff I cannot really talk so I find it interesting to listen to the conversations going on around me. The dental assistant was telling the dentist about something and I drifted off into my own thoughts when the drill noise made it difficult to hear. When the drill stopped I heard her say apidexin. At first I thought it must be some new type of treatment for appendicitis. Then I realized they were talking about a diet pill. Why is it that pharmaceuticals have such strange names? Oh, the mysteries of life.

  5. It was on TV. Not Once, But 5 Times.

    June 16, 2010 by azNorm

Sometimes when I (Norm, Karen’s husband) watch TV, my finger goes nuts and keeps pressing the channel button on the remote and the television goes from channel to channel.

Yesterday, I found that 5 channels had stories about malignant Mesothelioma .

I was surprised because there were 5 different reporters and each was talking about the same thing, with different backgrounds, but more or less then same report.  Graphics were a little different, but this is why I know that they were all covering the same story.  I could see it across the bottom of the screen.

I had turned the audio down, not off, but down, so I might have missed it had the reports not used visuals.

  6. Karen’s Husband On the Job

    June 16, 2010 by azNorm

I started work in 1961.   I called it quits in 1995.  During that time, I never really thought about disability insurance .

Don’t know why, my father was always big on insurance coverage of any type as he was “uninsurable”…. health wise and he always made sure that his children had coverage and were aware of it’s importance.

Here, I have to be honest, I don’t know why I never seemed to be concerned with not being able to work because… say from an injury.  Guess since I never thought of sky diving or bungee cord jumping, never though anything would effect me and my ability to work.

  7. He Wants to Give Me Nickels?

June 11, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

Have you ever had one of those days when just cannot focus on much?  A day where you cannot get beyond staring in the mirror thinking about ridiculous things like getting rid of blackheads?  I had a day like that a few days ago.  So, I decided I needed to get out of the house and do something fun.

Norm and I went to Chick-fil-A for lunch because it is a fun thing to do now and then.  He was excited seeing all the little fire engine displays advertising their new spicy chicken sandwich, which he ordered for the first time.  After talking with one of the owners for a few minutes at the counter, we ordered our lunch and headed for a table.

It was a bit crowded, so I turned around carefully trying to navigate through all the people around me.  I stopped suddenly when a little boy, probably about four years old, stepped right in front of me.  He reached out his hand toward my left hand.  (Now you have to understand something first, my left hand doesn’t do much, so most of the time it is laying on my lap in a fist position.)  Just as I was about to say something to the little boy, his mother said to me that he liked my wheelchair and wanted to give me nickels.  What?  Did I understand that right?  Suddenly his fist reached for my fist (my left hand laying on my lap) and then I realized that his mother actually said, “he wants to give you knuckles.”  LOL, how sweet is that?  As quickly as it happened, he took off and out the door they went.  I laughed about it for the rest of the day.  Just what I needed!

  8. Teenagers

June 11, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

Dealing with teenagers is something that I find difficult to do.  Perhaps it’s because I did not like being a teenager?  I do not know what it is, but I find that I can not think of anything to say when I am around a teenager.  I actually feel awkward, which is how most of them usually feel around adults.  Well, tomorrow morning there will be a bunch of them over at my house, although I probably will not be around them much.  They’re supposed to be here at 5:30 AM to work on my backyard.  The youth group at my church will be cleaning up the backyard as a community service project.  It needs the work and I am very thankful they are offering to do this!  Maybe I can wow them with my knowledge of odd things like the names of insects I find in the backyard, an acnepril review, or how many birds I can name?  I am sure that will break the ice and I will not feel so awkward.  Not.
