  1. Always thinking of adding.

    May 31, 2010 by azNorm

It’s me, once again, Karen’s Husband Norm filling in for her as our kitchen still has the fans and they are making too much noise for her to use her microphone to dictate her blogs.  I on the other hand, do it the old fashion way, one finger at a time.

We have a leak in the wall behind the kitchen sink and dishwasher, and the pipes will be repaired and most likely the floor replaced with new tile.  Long story, you don’t want to know.  Just take my word for it.

But I have to tell you, it gets me thinking about all the things that would be fun to do to our house.  It’s one built in the 60s, and at first glance it looks pretty much as it did when it was built.  Now the appliances have been modernized and replaced.  The carpet replaced with title and the glass replaced as well.

We have blinds in all the windows, and I have to tell you with the kitchen the way it is, I have been thinking that faux wood blinds would go very nicely, thank you very much.

That’s me though, always thinking about how neat things would look in our house.  I guess instead of calling me “Norm”, you could call me “Remodel Ron”.

  2. It’s Me Again.

    May 31, 2010 by azNorm

Here I am again.  Karen’s husband, Norm… typing away.

When Karen “writes” a post, she dictates using a microphone connected to her computer.  Real High Tech.

But last Friday afternoon we discovered a water leak in the hallway in front of the door which opened to our Hot Water Heater.  In an effort to control your tears, it was determined that it wasn’t a leaking hot water heater, but a pipe behind the kitchen sink and dishwasher.

Since mid Friday afternoon our kitchen has been closed off from the rest of our house and there are two fans…dehumidifiers,  churning away in there, trying to dry out the wall.  And not only is it hot in the kitchen itself, but noisy in the area where Karen’s computer is… just a few feet  away from the kitchen.  So with all the noise, it’s hard for her to dictate.  So here I am blogging away.

I suppose I could write a review about the fan devises in our kitchen or write several  nuphedragen reviews or one even about our 2 for 1 lunch today at Cafe ZuZu at the Valley Ho here in Scottsdale.

But, I have to be honest… my fingers are tired.

  3. GPS Versus Locals

May 25, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

My cousin is coming to visit today and she’s driving over from San Diego.  I spoke with her yesterday and told her how to get here from there, but she assured me that everything would be fine because they have GPS in the car.  So, the telephone rang a few minutes ago and I almost didn’t answer it because I thought it was somebody with a term life insurance quote.  It was my cousin telling me they missed an exit.  She told me where they were and I explained to her she was going the wrong way anyways.  Oh, but that’s how the GPS told us to go.  But the GPS doesn’t know what I know.  As a local, who has traveled the route from Scottsdale to San Diego and back many times over, I know which roads are better.  She’ll get here all right, but it’s going to take her longer.  We are planning on having lunch together.  I’m going to be good and hungry when she gets here because it will be later than we expected.  Sometimes technology is not always better.

  4. California Already Has SB 1070

May 17, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego local governments have ignorantly called for boycotts of Arizona over SB 1070.  They call for boycotts over a law they haven’t read and they are ignorant of their own state laws.  Even the governor is ignorant of his own state laws and shamelessly jokes about Arizona’s law.  California Penal Code Section 834b is very similar to the provisions of Arizona’s law SB 1070.

834b. (a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully
cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization
Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is
suspected of being present in the United States in violation of
    federal immigration laws.
    (b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected
of being present in the United States in violation of federal
immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the
    following:
    (1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen
of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent
resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time
or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of
immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not
be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and
place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding
documentation to indicate his or her legal status.
    (2) Notify the person of his or her apparent status as an alien
who is present in the United States in violation of federal
immigration laws and inform him or her that, apart from any criminal
justice proceedings, he or she must either obtain legal status or
    leave the United States.
    (3) Notify the Attorney General of California and the United
States Immigration and Naturalization Service of the apparent illegal
status and provide any additional information that may be requested
    by any other public entity.
    (c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city,
county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with
jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent
or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly
    prohibited.

I’m convinced political liberalism encourages ignorance and stupidity. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black or cutting off your nose to spite your face. California boycotting Arizona is leading Arizona to boycott California and neither of these is a good idea.

Arizona has a right to protect itself from the criminal element who uses the lax federal regulation of immigration laws and the unsecured borders to illegally enter the country & commit crimes against our residents.

I fully support and encourage legal immigration!

The Washington Times has a great report on the hypocrisy of California.

  5. Secret Phenomenon

May 14, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

So yesterday Norm comes back from the doctors office after his weekly acupuncture treatment.  We’re watching TV and having a little snack and I asked him if they weighed him again this week.  He said they did weigh him and he lost a pound but he doesn’t have an explanation for this sudden stomach fat loss.  I think I know what it was.  It must’ve been last Friday when we wandered all over Hobby Lobby.  It was a huge store and they didn’t have an electric cart for him to ride in.  Walking, that’s the secret.

  6. Chitchat

May 13, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

It has occurred to me today that I don’t spend time talking on the phone anymore. It used to be that I would talk on the phone several times a week to various friends, but I can’t remember the last time I did that. Perhaps the Internet has taken away my need for phone calls to girlfriends? I miss those days and quite frankly I miss having those silly sort of girlfriend chats. Long gone are the days when I would while away the minutes discussing the latest magazine articles I’ve read, who’s using diet pills, fashion trends, and various and sundry other mundane topics. Now I just sit at my computer and read what everybody else is talking about on Facebook and Twitter. I’m getting bored of it and I really could use some girlfriend time. Only trouble is I don’t have any girlfriends who are free to just spend time together. Everyone I know is either busy with children, grandchildren or working. Ho-hum. Woe is me.

On lighter news I discovered that it’s no fun to drink with a straw that has more than two holes. All you do is suck air or spit soda all over yourself.

  7. The Joys of Growing Older

May 11, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

Did you like high school? I didn’t and I didn’t like being an adolescent either. I wanted to grow up fast and become an adult. Somehow I thought that I would get over all my problems when I grew up. I was wrong. Many of the problems I had as a teenager have changed into other kinds of problems. Take for instance adult acne and bad hair days. Who knew they would accompany me into adulthood? Now of course there are wrinkles to deal with. One thing I have now though, that I didn’t have when I was an adolescent, is it a good sense of humor. This video says it all. Enjoy.

  8. The Empty Nest

May 6, 2010 by Karen of Scottsdale

Tinkerbell, our resident hummingbird, has done a marvelous job raising her babies.  On Tuesday I noticed one of the babies sitting on the edge of the nest and flapping his wings as if he were about to take off.  Apparently this was a test flight maneuver because the next morning there was only one baby bird in the nest.  And now this morning, Thursday, there are no babies in the nest.  Norm and I were concerned that perhaps the baby bird had fallen out of the nest.  We went outside to look around the ground near the nest.  Suddenly I heard a familiar peeping and looked up to see one of the baby birds fly towards us and land on a branch not far from their nest.  He sat there for a minute as we looked up at him.  I think he recognized us as we came outside and wanted to let us know he was okay.  In the past few weeks I went outside often to sit near the nest and talk to the baby birds, so he must’ve recognized me.  Norm and I went back inside the house.  While we were in his office I saw another baby hummingbird, or perhaps the same one, land on the branch of our other pine tree which is in front of his office window.  He sat there for a few minutes.  I’m sure it takes them a few days to get used to flying around looking for food on their own.  I think we might put a hummingbird feeder in the front yard so we can watch for them.  I miss them already!

This first video was taken on Tuesday.  You’ll see one of the birds sitting on the edge of the nest testing his wings.

The second video was taken on Wednesday.  This is the baby bird who wasn’t quite ready yet and stayed another day.
