Am I a Victim?

The other day I received an e-mail from the Scottsdale public library telling me that books I checked out were overdue.   Right away I knew something was wrong because I haven’t been to the library in over a year.   I looked at the titles of the books and realized they were books I would’ve never checked out.   I called the library to report the error.   They removed the books from my record, but their explanation for what happened doesn’t make any sense.   My library card is in my possession and my name is not one that somebody else could mistakenly use since I have two last names.   They told me that I probably had used self check out and didn’t take the receipt thus enabling someone to come behind me and check out books under my account.   Since I haven’t been to the library in over a year that is impossible.   Weird.   They offered no other explanation and didn’t seem to think it was a big deal.

Am I a victim of identity theft at the library?   I suppose it could’ve been worse.   Someone could have hacked into my bank account and spent what little money I have on discount furniture.

Must be the faulty checkout systems there, whereby your account was mistakenly taken as being scanned in.

Hmm. Identity theft? Probably not. Better ask a librarian for some books on it.
