The erudite William F. Buckley Jr., one of the greatest conservative thinkers of our time, passed away yesterday. Mr. Buckley always fascinated me whenever I saw him on Firing Line during my high school years, and maybe even before. The way he spoke about politics and conservative principles shaped me early on. His vocabulary was impressive and I listened to him in awe and was charmed by his wit. For me he made being intellectual, philosophical and political cool. Even my blog sis Pat has admitted to a secret crush on WFB. Now I know why she and I became friends so easily!
During my college years I discovered Young Americans for Freedom while attending San Diego State University, and knew that I had to be a part of such an organization just because he was the founder. My political science professors never had kind words for him, but I challenged their assumptions and often impressed my classmates and professors with my willingness to speak up for my conservative principles and not buy into groupthink or moral relativism. Mr. Buckley helped me to do that.
Perhaps one day I’ll get to meet Mr. Buckley in heaven and thank him for standing firm to his principles and teaching us what it means to be a conservative. Senator John McCain could learn a few things from him!

I miss books. There was a time in my life when I was always reading a book, sometimes two or three at a time. Not so anymore. It’s been years since I read a novel and I really miss that. There’s something different about getting lost in a book that you just don’t get with watching a movie or listening to an audio book. Books are just too hard for me to deal with any more. Holding a book is hard when you don’t have much strength in your hands. I have used book holders in the past, but they don’t work that well. Maybe someday I’ll get back to reading books again. It’s nice having so much reading material available online, but sitting in front of a computer all day gets tiresome. I need to get one of those small electronic reading devices. So far I haven’t found one I like enough to shell out the big bucks. (dreaming…)

When the weather is nice you just want to be outdoors. Yesterday was one of those days and it was a pleasure to be outside in the warmth of the sun and enjoy the fresh air. It seemed that most of the week had been overcast and even raining on some days, so it was great to be able to enjoy the weather outside. Here are some of my observations from my outdoor adventures yesterday: (more…)

Back in the day I remember my grandmother was a coupon clipper. If she found a coupon in the paper she had to clip it even if she didn’t need or use the product. Grandma was always having company over so she liked to keep her pantry well-stocked and clipping coupons made that easy to do. (more…)

A while back I was going through some old photos and ran across this one which is probably about 20 years old. Looking at it brought back so many memories. This is a picture of my brother, Jack, and me at our family Christmas get-together. Boy we sure looked different back then and our lives were very different from what they are today. I’d say it was after a couple of years of this photograph being taken that my brother’s life was forever changed for the good because of some decisions he made. Today is his birthday and I’m so glad that he is my brother!
It’s apparent from this photograph that I used to have a love for scarves and plaid. My tastes were so different back then. I was very much into Victoria Magazine and I would have gone crazy over Kravet fabrics. I was in college and my girlfriends and I used to enjoy afternoon tea at the US Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. It seems like a lifetime ago. (seems I was fond of green eye shadow too…)

Most of my married friends have husbands who are really into golf, football, basketball or baseball or all four. If there’s a game on their watching it. Not so with my husband. He’s never been much for sports so I’m definitely not a “sports widow” as a lot of women are during certain times of the year. (more…)
