My cat GG is known as the cat burglar in our house as well as the mysterious cat because she disappears when people come over. This morning I went to my desk and one of my brand-new, favorite of all time, writing pens was on the floor in three pieces. It’s not unusual to find one or two of my writing pens on the floor in the morning because GG likes to play with them during the night making them fall off the desk. However, this time she somehow managed to unscrew the pen and take it apart. Unfortunately there is a piece missing so I can’t put it back together and Norm and I can’t seem to find the piece anywhere. Not only is GG a burglar but now she is a vandal. Naughty cat!

My Short-Lived Sports Career
May 24, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale
Way back when I was 18 or 19 years old I had a friend who played on our church women’s softball team in San Diego. Every Saturday I would go watch her play. One-time their scorekeeper didn’t show up so I volunteered and became the regular scorekeeper that season and the next one. It was a blast and my one and only experience with team sports. The coach of our church team was a great man named Kip and he eventually became good friends with my father and many years later officiated at my wedding.
I found out the other day a friend’s daughter plays for University of Michigan and will be pitching at the NCAA Waco Super Regional. If they win this weekend they’ll be playing in the Women’s College World Series. Go Lady Wolverines and Go Blue!

Many Thanks!
May 23, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale
The creator of my blog template, Kaushal Sheth, has kindly repaired the template so it loads properly with the WordPress 2.2 upgrade. He is a very talented person who lives in Mumbai, India. I sent him an e-mail last night soliciting his help in solving the problem and he responded right away. The power of the Internet makes it possible for someone in Scottsdale, Arizona to connect with someone in Mumbai, India and resolve a problem in less than 12 hours! Astounding!

It’s Broken
May 22, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale
I upgraded to WordPress 2.2 yesterday and now my blog looks funky when you try to put in a comment or look at an individual post. I’m investigating what needs to be done so please be patient until I have time to fix it.

Blog-Tied
May 19, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale
It’s kind of like being tongue-tied. That’s how I have felt for the past week because I’ve been wanting to post something on my blog but it’s not been easy to formulate words for my thoughts. If you read Norm’s blog then you know that we found out a week ago that his son passed away last month. He was 35 years old and he will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him.
The evening that Norm and I learned of his son’s passing we had planned to meet our friends Terry and Tracy for our usual Friday night get-together at Wienerschnitzel. They were a great help by just listening to Norm and being the dear friends they are to us. Many others who are friends and family have been praying for us and offering words of sympathy and encouragement. God is good even through the toughest times in life.
Life goes on, as the saying goes, but when someone you love dearly is hurting it consumes much of your thoughts. One’s own mortality and the knowledge that life could be cut short at any time comes to the forefront. What do you say and how are you supposed to act when such a tragedy occurs? There are times when it just hits you and all you can do is grieve and mourn.
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.” (Matthew 5 The Message paraphrase)
Thank you God for embracing us as we mourn.

Easy Writer
May 3, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale
(part of my Stuff That Makes My Life Easier series)
If you have weak hands like I do, you probably find it difficult to write with most ballpoint pens. I always enjoyed handwriting and in my younger years I even taught myself calligraphy. As I’ve gotten older I’ve found my hands even weaker so writing can be difficult with the wrong kind of instrument. I’ve tried various pens over the years and have discovered that ballpoint pens are the worst because the ink doesn’t flow very well and you have to push harder which causes fatigue quickly and makes writing unenjoyable. Rolling ball pens and felt tip pens are the easiest to use however they generally have caps and that can be difficult to get on and off if you have little strength as I do. A few years ago they started making gel ink pens in a clickable capless format. I like these pens however the ink smears because it takes longer to dry so they can be quite messy.
Recently I discovered the perfect pen by Pilot known as the Precise V5/V7 Retractable. I use the V7 model because of its nice thin line. It’s retractable but I find I can leave it open all the time, laying on my desk ready to be used without having to click first, and it never dries out. There’s a comfortable rubber grip which makes holding it easier. It’s wonderful to write with and it’s also refillable.
I picked one up a few months ago at Staples when they had them sitting in one of those point-of-purchase displays at the register. I found it better than the Pilot G2 pens I was currently using. About a month or so later I tried finding them at the store but no one carried them — not Staples and not OfficeMax, which are the main office supply stores in my area. I did however find they are available on the Pilot USA website. Now I own three of them plus refills. That should hold me over for a while unless someone borrows one and doesn’t return it. I’m very cautious about letting anyone else use my pens when they are so hard to come by.
