  1. The Clinic

March 26, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale

Friday I went to the MDA clinic in Phoenix for a visit with the neurologist and respiratory therapist.  It was just a routine checkup and I’m doing OK, although they want me to see a pulmonary specialist since SMA does compromise my breathing ability in that it weakens the muscles of the diaphragm.  I do miserably on breathing tests but my oxygen saturation levels are excellent so my body compensates quite well.  However if I get a cold or bronchitis I have a very hard time.  The neurologist thinks if I see a pulmonary specialist now it will be better than waiting until I’ve got real problems.  He could be right — but I just hate going to doctors.

I also don’t like going to the MDA clinic.  Don’t get me wrong, the people are always very nice and the doctors and other medical practitioners that I see there are for the most part tops in their field.  The reason why I don’t like going has to do with my history.  You see I’ve been attending MDA clinics since I was 18 months old.  As a child and an adolescent MDA clinic was at minimum a twice yearly event and wrought with much emotional turmoil for me.

Going to the clinic would mean that I would see a pediatric neurologist, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist and other various medical personnel.  Usually there would be medical students there to observe.  I would go through a battery of tests and questions which would bring me to the same result every time.  The emphasis of all of this was on what spinal muscular atrophy was doing to my body.  Everything I could not do was showcased.  The reality of my fragile physical condition was laid bare for everyone much in the same way that my clothes were removed and I would be given one of those horrid hospital gowns to wear.

There would be discussion of my scholastic achievements and the fact that I was a normal active child much like any other child except for the fact of my very disabling condition.  Somehow it seemed less important than the fact of my disease.  I always left those clinic appointments feeling sad, very sad.  I even remember crying many times at those appointments.

The emotions from those years, especially the adolescent years, are still very strong.  I was astounded on Friday at how much of it came back to me while sitting and waiting at the clinic.  I’m not a person who lives in the negative or dwells on what I cannot do.  I’m a person who focuses on what I can do and strives for accomplishment.  My life is a happy one and a satisfying one because of the blessings of God and my family and friends.  I’m glad I don’t have to visit the clinic very often but I am surprised at how much of the pain is still there.

  2. The Tail’s Tale

March 19, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale

Last week, while working at my computer, my cat GG was playing with something behind me. I could hear her murmuring and scratching at something, but I was so engrossed in what I was doing that I didn’t pay much attention. Finally I could stand it no longer so I had to look. I turned around and there she was scratching at something on the floor up against the side of the bookcase. I said something to her and she took off so I moved closer to the area to investigate but could see nothing there.

She headed off to the living room so I went in pursuit of her thinking she had something and I was right. Lo and behold there it was — a lizard’s tail. But where was the lizard? Norm came into the room and he retrieved the tail and promptly disposed of it in the trash. He felt sorry for the lizard but I assured him the lizard would grow another one. We looked behind the bookcase and everywhere else we could think of but there was no lizard to be found.

About an hour or two later I went back into the living room because I heard something fall to the floor. I thought for sure GG was up to something again. There was no GG but there was a lizard with no tail right there on the floor next to Norm’s recliner chair. I called Norm into the room from his office in the front bedroom and pointed out the lizard. Norm came up with a great way to capture the lizard. We let the poor guy go outside shortly after taking photographs for posterity.

az_lizard-_sans_tail.jpgGG was off taking a nap somewhere in the house so she never got to see her prey again. Every time I go out in the backyard I scan the brick walls looking for a tailless lizard but I haven’t found him yet. I’m sure he’s out there somewhere no doubt telling all the other lizards about his close encounter with a terrorizing feline in our house. I can’t figure out how he got in the house unless he came in while I was going in or out the backdoor — or the front door for that matter. If he’s smart he won’t come back inside anytime soon!

  3. Got the Hiccups?

March 17, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale

The Hic-Cup invention is device that gives a small electric charge to your temple to stop your hiccups.  I think my method works better and you don’t have to buy anything.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had the hiccups, but I used to get them a lot and they caused me great discomfort.  Years ago when I was in college at San Diego State University I got the hiccups really bad one day while attending classes.  I was so desperate to get rid of them I went to the student medical center.  There was a nurse there who had worked in a Chicago ER for years and said she knew just the thing to stop my hiccups.  She gave me a small plastic cup filled with water and placed a paper towel over the opening of the cup and told me to drink through the paper towel.  In order to do that you have to sip and suck the water through the paper.  It worked!  I realized after a few years that all I needed to do was sip water very slowly through a straw to get the same effect.

  4. Already?

March 16, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale

We went out for lunch and we got in the car to come home the thermometer read 100° and here’s the proof: (click on the image to see it full size)ish_tr22515.gif

I took a picture of the data so you could see for yourself that on March 16, 2007 we actually hit 102° here in Scottsdale. It’s too early for this!

  5. Yellow, Yellow and More Yellow

March 14, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale

 Update 03/18: I saw the birds again this morning right outside my bedroom window so I got a much better look since they were only a few feet away. They are either American Goldfinch or Lesser Goldfinch. The Lesser Goldfinch is more common in this area but the American Goldfinch can be here as well and what I saw looks like that rather than the other.

    ===========

The other morning I’m sitting in my backyard enjoying the warm weather and looking at all the weeds. Suddenly a cute little yellow bird perches on the lattice wall of our small ramada. Yellow birds are unusual so I was quite surprised and turned my head so I could see the bird better. As soon as I turned my head he was startled by the fact of my presence and flew away toward the pine tree in the front yard. I only saw the bird for a few seconds, but it looked like a Verdin which has yellow on its breast.

Yesterday as I was getting up I looked out our bedroom window and saw a bright yellow bird sitting on the electrical wire high above our backyard. It looked as if the front body of the bird was bright yellow and its head and wings were almost black. It was quite a distance from the window and I didn’t have binoculars so I’m not so sure about that black color. I was certain however that it couldn’t be a Verdin based on what I saw. He sat there for a while and then took off. Two more came back later but didn’t stay very long.

Being the curious birdwatcher I am, as soon as I got dressed and in my power wheelchair, I was off to my desk to hunt for my Arizona Field guide for birds. Certainly I would discover this beautiful bird’s common name. However, much to my chagrin, it turns out there are four or five different birds with bright yellow feathers on their breast. Since I couldn’t get a better look at the bird I still don’t know what I saw. I must say that I have never seen a bright yellow bird in my neighborhood before. Someday I hope to find out what that bird was.

Later in the day Norm and I went to the grocery store and there I spied yellow marshmallow peeps. We just had to get some because it’s not springtime without peeps!

  6. Duncan Hunter Interview

March 12, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale

Hot Air has video of a short interview with Republican presidential candidate Congressman Duncan Hunter at CPAC.

And I think it’s time I set the record straight — John McCain will never receive my vote for the Republican nomination.

  7. One More Hour

March 10, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale

We’re not setting our clocks ahead by one hour tonight — yippie!  We in Arizona will get one more hour of sleep than the rest of the nation.  (Except for the Navajo Nation because they’re the only place in Arizona that goes by daylight savings time.)  Don’t you wish you lived here?

Oh — as if that weren’t enough enticement — it’s noon and I just came back from enjoying a wonderful stroll through the neighborhood in 80° weather.  I’m sending warm thoughts and sunshine to all of my friends in colder climes.

  8. True Norm

March 9, 2007 by Karen of Scottsdale

So this evening Norm and I went to a movie since we haven’t been in so many months I can’t remember the last thing we saw.  Tonight we enjoyed Music & Lyrics which was a terrifically funny romantic comedy.  Norm wasn’t really keen on going to see this movie but he gives in to me because he knows that I usually pick good ones.

We’re sitting there in the theater, holding hands at times, and enjoy a good laugh.  There is this one scene where two people are singing in a recording studio.  It wasn’t a particularly funny scene, or even romantic, but Norm found something very special about it.  That’s when I heard him say, “Wow, look at that microphone!”  That’s my Norm.
