  1. Cold and Colder

November 29, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

Sunny blue skies but extremely cold weather today in the Sonoran Desert of Scottsdale, Arizona. It stayed in the mid-50s today and right now it’s in the 40s. It might even freeze tonight. Definitely sweater weather! I had my first hot chocolate of the holiday season and boy was it good. Thank you Norm for making the Starbucks run while I slaved away on the computer this afternoon.

My cat Miss Ellie comes in from the cold, gets a few nibbles of kibble, and then jumps up in my lap to get warm. She can be very demanding this time of year when she’s cold and wants me to warm her up. Last night she jumped up on my desk and sat in front of my computer screen so I couldn’t do any work until I put her in my lap. Miss Ellie definitely prefers the heat of summer rather than the cold of winter. Oh here she comes now — I won’t be able to blog anymore tonight.

  2. Thanksgiving Weekend Recap

November 27, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

We had a great time with our friends Terry and Tracy on Thanksgiving day. Norm even watched a little football which had everyone in shock. We had a nice meal and enjoyed casual conversation. Definitely a relaxing day!

Friday I dragged my husband out of the house even after he blogged about wanting to stay away from parking lots on Black Friday. We had a great pizza lunch at Patsy Grimaldi’s in Old Town Scottsdale and then went to RadioShack to look at cell phones. We have been cell phone free for over a year, maybe even two years now. It’s a long story — but basically it was a financial cutback that determined we no longer needed a cell phone. I’ve been scouring the Internet for some of those pay-as-you-go cell phone deals and decided upon a certain one. The sales guy at RadioShack was very helpful and, after he explained the plan of the one cell phone company that we were interested in, he then pointed out another one that I had not looked into. It turned out to be a much better deal so now Norm has a cell phone once again and I can track him down when he is out carousing Scottsdale.

Saturday was another fun and lazy day for us. We had our favorite chili for lunch at Charleston’s in North Scottsdale and then we braved the crowds at Wal-Mart for a few needed items. It really wasn’t that bad and seemed more like a typical Saturday crowd to me. And then I saw what for me marked the beginning of the Christmas season — a Salvation Army bell ringer as we exited the Wal-Mart. We went past him and headed for the minivan, a.k.a. “the bus” as Norm likes to call it, but I made Norm stop and look for some cash. We found some in my wallet so I went back to the bell ringer. I couldn’t quite reach the bucket to put the money into it so I was going to hand it to the man, but instead he unhooked the bucket from its tripod and put it within my reach. Now there’s a smart man! It was a simple thing to do but it felt good and now I feel like Christmas is on its way. Giving is so much a part of Christmas and really that’s what it’s all about — God giving to us a savior so that we could be in right relationship with him.

Sunday morning was cold (59°F) so I put on a new sweater I’ve been wanting to wear for a couple months now but it’s been too hot. We headed to church and it look like snow was on the ground as we drove along the freeway through the Salt River Pima Indian Reservation. On the east side of the freeway there are acres and acres of cotton fields. The white balls of cotton covering the fields looked like snow. It’s the closest thing to snow we’ll ever get around here! Our service at Desert Vista Church was great. We had an extended time of corporate worship and communion. We heard a short message about how our relationship with God is like being in tune with a song. The example was a symphony where everyone plays a different instrument but they all need to be in tune and playing the right note at the right time. It was an interesting analogy and it got me thinking. I was going to write about what I was thinking or pondering since yesterday, but it’s mostly abstract ideas that I can’t really put into words right now. It’s a good thing to be pondering after attending church. It means that God is working on something within me and that’s important if I’m going to be in tune with the symphony of the kingdom of God.

It’s cold again today and will be colder throughout the week. I realize most of you think I’m a wimp because I’m talking about temperatures in the lower 60s, but for this desert dweller that’s downright cold! We might even get a little rain tomorrow and that calls for hot chocolate.

Oh and one more thing — the latest update on my new wheelchair is December 8.

  3. Happy Thanksgiving

November 22, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

Norm and I will be spending Thanksgiving at the home of our friends Terry and Tracy.  We are so looking forward to spending some time with them tomorrow.  They are a really nice couple we met at church and this year we have gotten to know them quite well.

Thanksgiving is a good time to reflect upon one’s life.  I am thankful first of all for the grace of God in my life because without him my life would be meaningless.  God has blessed me with a wonderful husband and parents and brother and sister-in-law and three beautiful nieces and of course dozens upon dozens of extended family.  I have wonderful friends here in Scottsdale and elsewhere around the world and I am thankful for them all.

Oh — I almost forgot — I am thankful for getting out of jury duty today!  I received a jury summons for Scottsdale City Court and I was supposed to appear today.  Last night I called the number on the jury summons to find out what time I should report today, but the recording stated that all jurors were excused from duty since the court would be closed today.  And even better than that is the fact that we are only required to serve one day of jury duty in the state Arizona so I have fulfilled my obligation for the year.  If you get selected for trial, of course you have to serve the entire period of the case, but if you don’t get appointed to a trial jury you only have to serve one day.  I think that’s pretty cool.  In California I served on a jury and that was enough for me.

No news on the wheelchair and that has got me frustrated.  OK — enough whining for now.

  5. Dude Where’s My Car?

November 14, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

So Friday night we went out for a date, something we haven’t done for a long time.  On the way home our van started making some weird noises and felt like it wouldn’t quite shift into the gear.  We barely made it into our driveway.  Saturday morning our van was towed to the repair shop.  Yes, it’s the transmission and it won’t be ready till Thursday.  We had no van on Saturday or Sunday because there were no rental vans available due to the big car race and football game on both ends of Phoenix Metro.  Fortunately we were able to get a van yesterday so I’m no longer housebound.  I was getting cabin fever but Norm would’ve been happy to stay home the entire week.  Why do opposites attract?

  6. Too Funny

November 14, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

As Norm and I were watching TV tonight we saw this commercial for some new pharmaceutical product.  You know how they always give the disclaimers about possible side effects.  Well this one included a warning that you should avoid any activities that could cause injury to yourself.  LOL Norm’s list of possible activities to avoid was quite humorous but not fit for discussion on my blog.  Anyhow, it would seem that it would be safest to avoid taking that drug altogether as normal daily living could cause injury to yourself.  I don’t know why they bother to advertise!

  7. This Guy Knows His Stuff

November 13, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

US Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts recently spoke to an audience of 3000 at the University of Miami.  This quote from the ABC news story says a lot about why Chief Justice Roberts is the right man for the job.

“Not a single person has voted for me and if we don’t like what the people in Congress do we can get rid of them, you know, if you don’t like what I do, it’s kind of too bad. And that is to me an important constraint,” Roberts said. “It means that I’m not there to make a judgment based on my personal policy preferences or my political preferences.

“The only reason, the reason I’m protected from those political pressures is because I’m supposed to make a decision based on the law,” he said. “And so I don’t think it would be a good idea to turn all the hard issues over to the courts. Those hard issues belong in Congress, they belong in the executive branch. Courts have the responsibility to make sure that those branches abide by the legal limits of the Constitution.”

Yes he actually said it — judges make decisions based on the law — they don’t create the law.  Thank God President Bush nominated him and the U.S. Senate did the right thing by confirming him!

  8. Rocky & Bullwinkle

November 8, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

Reading through my favorite blogs this evening I came across this post at The Mad Tea Party.  The March Hare reminds us of the importance of having humor and she relates her memories of her beloved father and his odd sense of humor which she inherited.  Aside from it being a great post, what really struck me was her mentioning Rocky & Bullwinkle.

Boy could I use some Rocky & Bullwinkle right now!  Ever since I was a very young child Rocky & Bullwinkle, Peabody & Sherman, Aesop & Son, and the Fractured Fairytales were my absolute favorite cartoons.  I’m sure I didn’t understand the puns when I was a child but they were so silly and dry at the same time.  I have always appreciated humor that makes you think.  What passes for humorous entertainment today is so full of crap and potty humor it has dumbed down most people’s sense of humor.

It’s very rare that I will buy a DVD but I think I’m going to have to look for some Rocky & Bullwinkle to start a DVD collection.  We don’t have a DVD collection right now because I never saw a need for it since there’s so much available on cable and you can rent DVDs almost anywhere — although we never do.  Guess that’s going to change now.
