  1. Autumn in Scottsdale

October 28, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

The weather is more comfortable these days and the signs of autumn are everywhere around town.  More people everywhere you go because snowbirds are starting to show up.  Flowers are blooming now that it’s in the 80s instead of the 100s during the days and the cool 60s at night.  There’s also a distinct barnyard smell of manure around the neighborhood for those who are seeding for their winter lawn.  We gave up growing grass a few years ago.

Another thing that’s a sure sign its autumn — we won’t be changing our clocks tonight.  That’s one of the things I like about living in Arizona because we never have to change our clocks.

  2. Welcome Quest Readers!

October 28, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

Considering the Quest article has been out for about a week now this post is a little late.  I was interviewed for the article during the summer, so there are couple of things I’d like to clarify since the information in the article is outdated.  I no longer use Google’s Blogger service.  I liked it but wanted to expand my blogging experience so now I’m using WordPress and I host my own blog using DreamHost.

If you’re considering starting your own blog I highly recommend Blogger because it’s very easy to use and totally free.  If you have your own webspace, you can still use Blogger’s service, but there are couple of changes you need to make which are outlined in their help section.

WordPress is also a free blogging format, but it’s more robust and requires a bit more technical tweaking on the backend.  I don’t recommend it unless you are tech savvy or enjoy learning things on your own.

I have received a few e-mails from people introducing themselves to me after they have read the Quest article.  If you would like to drop me a note please do so using my contact information or leave a comment.

  3. Can You Relate?

October 25, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

I heard this story the other day and thought I would share it with you.

Imagine I’m holding a crisp, brand-new $100 bill.  Would you like it?  Of course you would!  Now, suppose I take this brand-new $100 bill and crush it up into a tiny ball and then I take it outside and throw it in a muddy spot in the dirt and then I roll over it a dozen times with my wheelchair.  Do you want it now?  I bet you answered yes.  Why?  Why would you want this piece of paper after it’s been damaged like that?  Because it’s still valuable!

I am just like that $100 bill and so are you.  Sometimes life takes us through the mud and we get crushed, but we still are valuable and that’s just the way God sees us in spite of the things we’ve been through.

  4. Free Speech Time

October 23, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

It’s time for me to have a say in response to some of the political ads I’ve been seeing on TV in the past week or two.

I don’t believe Pederson when he states in his commercial that Senator Kyle wants to criminalize abortion. Just because Senator Kyle voted to confirm the Supreme Court nominees does not mean he wants to make criminals out of women who kill their babies. If anything, I would think Senator Kyle wants the citizens of Arizona to have the opportunity to decide whether or not abortion should be legal, not a handful of Supreme Court justices who are not allowed by our Constitution to make laws.

Another thing about Pederson — I visited his gigantic shopping center in North Scottsdale over the weekend and I must say that he could care less about people who use motorized wheelchairs! Cobblestone pavers are painful when you roll over them in a wheelchair and it is criminal not to put ramps and curb cuts so that a wheelchair user can go from one section of the shopping center to another section of the shopping center without having to enter lanes of vehicle traffic and risk being hit by people who don’t look where they’re driving.

Now on to Harry Mitchell — you make me sick! How dare you accuse Congressman JD Hayworth of not caring about medical research to cure diseases such as MS and Parkinson’s. The federal limits on embryonic stem cell research have only to do with using federal funds — nothing more! How many times must I tell you people that embryonic stem cell research has not been limited by President Bush or Congress or anyone else in the Republican Party? Besides, embryonic stem cell research has not yielded anything close to a treatment! If anything is known from the research thus far it is that embryonic stem cells are hazardous because they can turn into tumors. It is highly misleading to suggest that the election of one candidate over another will lead to cures of seriously debilitating diseases! Do not be misled by the hype of Progressives, Liberals and Democrats who would rather deceive you then tell you the truth.

I for one think it is immoral to exploit the suffering of people for political purposes and then to mislead them by implying if you elect this guy over that guy we will find cures for horrible diseases. I am rolling off my soapbox now. (This post is closed for commenting to keep the trolls from contaminating my blog. If you have something you would like to comment on this post you can send me an e-mail.)

  5. New Power Wheelchair Update

October 23, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

Last week my new power wheelchair was ordered and I should have it sometime mid-November.  My insurance provider will not cover everything, so I’m waiting to find out what my out-of-pocket costs will be.  Also, we have to put a new wheelchair docking system in our minivan.  Everything costs so much when you are disabled!

  6. Birthday Recap

October 17, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

Yesterday was a nice day!  Norm took me to lunch at one of our favorite restaurants, Charleston’s in North Scottsdale, and arranged for some friends to meet us for desert.  What a nice surprise from my husband.  My friends spoiled me with chocolate so I will have plenty to last me for a while.  I guess everyone knows what I like.

Norm got me an MP3 player for my birthday.  After a lot of research online I decided to try the SanDisk Sansa, but after playing with it for a couple of hours I realized it was not a good fit for me because I could not control some of the buttons.  So we took it back and got the Creative Zen V Plus and it’s working out just great for me.  We also got a device that allows you to play the audio from the Zen on the car stereo or the home stereo via an FM transmitter.  Haven’t tried that out yet.  And today we got new headphones for me because the ones supplied with the player were the kind that fit inside your ear and I don’t like the way it feels.  We got something from RadioShack that Sony makes and it fits around the back of your neck and then has pieces that go over your ear like a regular headphone set.  That way you don’t get headphone hair!

A couple of months ago we got a free Wal-Mart music downloads card with $25 loaded on it for having someone give us a sales pitch for a product.  We didn’t buy the product but we got the free card anyways, so I purchased some music and downloaded it from the Wal-Mart site.  Once I got all the bugs worked out with Wal-Mart’s tech support (which was the best telephone tech support I had from anybody) everything worked out great.  I must remember next time that I have to play all the songs on my computer before I load them onto my MP3 player.  The licenses to use the music don’t download until you play the song once on your computer.

Right now I’m listening to some favorite tunes and it’s so nice!  Thanks so much Norm.  And a very special thank you to all of you who left me birthday wishes on my blog.

  7. Birthdays

October 16, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

Another year has past and it’s my birthday again. Wow, time sure goes by faster and faster each year. I thank God for his grace and mercy upon my life. I am blessed to have a loving husband, wonderful parents, a terrific brother and sister-in-love, and the three most adorable neices in the universe, friends all over the world and two sweet and sometimes wacky cats. All add something special to my life. Thank you!

  8. Ivan Is Back

October 14, 2006 by Karen of Scottsdale

Finally, Ivan has returned home from Data Doctors.  Poor Ivan was infected with a boot sector virus in the registry which caused him to run extremely slow.  The virus probably came through an e-mail attachment or something I downloaded from the Internet.  Yes, I run antivirus software, somehow this one escaped notice.  Data Doctors armed me with new software so hopefully I will be better protected in the future.

It was terrible being without Ivan for six days.  He is my trusty sidekick and provides me access to so many things and enables me to do things I normally cannot do.  Technology is wonderful and I don’t mind being dependent upon it.  It comes with the territory when you are physically challenged.  This Gimp Girl certainly enjoys being a little geeky.
